Information about gender inequality in Middle East and North Africa

Gender inequality is usually associated with such notions as discrimination, stereotypes and gender roles. It can be defined as unequal attitude to individuals, which is based on gender. This issue is known throughout the history of mankind. Some countries found the methods to fight it but some still support it legally. Here are the cases of women rights violation in the Middle East and North Africa.

1. Prerogative in family. Men have exclusive rights on all decisions regarding family affairs, while women are not allowed to take part in it.

2. Prohibition to drive. Women can neither ride bicycles nor drive cars in Saudi Arabia. The factor, which is making this issue sharper, is that only men that are closely related to women can ride cars together with women. This creates a problem with school buses and bringing girls to school.

3. Requirements to clothes. In the Middle East most countries demand that women have all their body covered. The most extreme clothing is called burqas when women have only their eyes open.

Also, Hindi women are restricted in their appearance: they have to wear a red dot between their eyes, which is called bindi.

4. Divorce restrictions. It is much harder for a woman from the Middle Eastern country to get a divorce: usually she would face financial and legal obstacles. The problem is especially serious in Egypt, where women have to pay additionally forgetting freedom.

5. Restrictions in traveling. It is rather difficult for women to travel abroad; in most countries they need to get the official permission from their husbands if they are married or brothers if not married in order to have an opportunity to go to a different country. Sometimes they need the same allowance to travel to a different part of their homeland if they use public transport.

6. Limited education. Enrollment of girls in schools is slowed down due to the factor that males and females can attend classes together till the third grade. After the certain age girls can study only in special schools for females or at home. Additionally, there is a lack of female teachers while girls cannot be taught by men.

7. Violence towards women. There are no laws to penalize violence at home. What is more, spousal rape is not considered to be a crime; husbands possess the body of their wives fully and are allowed to do with it what they desire. This makes women more vulnerable to violence.

8. Absence of family law. Family relationships are not regulated by law, except for very few cases. One of them is prohibition of sex outside of marriages for women.

9. Infanticide. The issue of discriminating women during their infant age is called infanticide. It takes place in China due to one-child policy.
