How do you write an essay? Writing a draft and revising.

Usually experts divide the essay writing process into 6 main stages: understanding the assignment, brainstorming, researching, outlining, writing, and revising. All of them are exceptionally important and have specific impact on the quality of essay, in whole, which is why we highly recommend you not to omit any of them. Every step possesses particular functions and contributes to some essay’s property. For instance, the research makes shapes your content and outline helps with structuring a paper. Our article will tell you, mainly, about the drafting step – the besic one in the writing process.

  1. 1.       Developing a thesis.
  • There is one more step before you started drafting – developing a thesis statement. Factually, it can have different names: “thesis”, “claim”, “point”, “main idea” etc. The meaning of this pattern is condensing the worth of your whole work in one or several sentences.
  • Readers are used to finding the thesis at the end of introduction and to learning your central idea from it. Thus, we advise you to do what is expected from you and follow this instruction about thesis statement.
  • Remember that the thesis statement should be original and not plagiarized. Here you demonstrate your personal position regarding some issue and cannot borrow the opinion of any other person. However, you are allowed to base and derive your own view from authoritative sources.
  • One more requirement to the thesis statement is its disputability. You do now have to state something obvious but must make a point and constrain the reader’s agreement.
  • Also, a good thesis usually is specific and never comes in a form of list or question.
  1. 2.       Working on arguments.
  • Essay writing is typically characterized as persuasive, which means that supporting the thesis by the arguments is unavoidable.
  • Provide you reasons for considering the thesis worth attention and discussion.
  • Your arguments must not be perfect from the very beginning. First you just present it and after you have an opportunity to refine it.
  • When you are writing do not forget about considering the counter-arguments. As your paper is persuasive they do surely exist. So, you as the writer must be ready to resist them and defend your claim.
  1. 3.       Mastering an introductory part.
  • One of the recommendations we give is not beginning drafting with introduction. It is usually more difficult and can make you stuck from the start. That is why, write your introduction after you have your thesis and arguments to it, which means that you can see the whole picture.
  • There are two basic ways of writing introduction: giving a historical review and linkages of your topic visit or beginning from some broad point and narrowing it into your thesis.
  1. 4.       Working on conclusion.
  • As the introduction serves as a bridge from general knowledge to your narrow topic so the conclusion should go other way round. Take your claim and show its place in the broader setting. Also, it is a good idea to show how the reader benefited from your essay and can implement your ideas in the real life.
  • The conclusion is the opportunity to leave the lasting impression and end on the positive note. Do not miss this chance!
