How to Write an Argumentative Essay: Tips for students.

An argumentative essay is the type of paper, the intention of which is to persuade the reader to accept your point of view on some ides, opinion, or concept. Writing of this kind requires deep research that involves investigating the topic, collecting the evidences, and determining the writer’s position. Here are some steps and tips for creating a successful argumentative paper.

Step 1. Conducting the research.

  • In order for your paper to be reasoning, first of all, you should check out a number of sources: books, articles, or internet resources. Clarify if you are to use some exact materials assigned by your professor. This is the point which should not be missed out.
  • Note the points, which you find the most suiting your subject. Do remember to cite your sources properly: check which reference style is needed and collect all the necessary details for it from the very beginning of your research so as you do not return to this point on writing or revising stage.
  • Sometimes an empirical research should be organized: you may be required to conduct the survey, carry out some interviews, or perform an experiment. Manage your time as usually this part takes more than the writing process itself.

Step 2. Introduction and thesis statement.

  • The introduction of each paper is the part that is to tell about the general context, in which your topic is set.
  • Make the importance of the issue clear for the audience: try to explain why the reader should care about the things you tell
  • The core of the introduction is the thesis statement – the central idea you are going to prove in the essay. It should be specific and concise; make your main idea easy for reader’s understanding.

Step 2. Writing body paragraphs.

  • Main body of the essay is the part where you are to support your thesis statement with evidences.
  • The evidences for the argumentative paper should be exceptionally persuading as here you are defending your opinion on the subject.
  • Consider different points of view on your topic and be ready to have counterarguments.
  • To prove your position you can use facts, life examples, statistics data, and logical deductions.
  • Do not forget about transitions between sentences and part of your essay. Make sure it flows and switching over one statement to another looks smooth.

Step 3. Conclude your essay.

  • The ending is as significant as all the other parts. Conclusion is a component that makes the reader remember your work.
  • Do not just paraphrase your thesis statement and sum up the evidential information but better synthesize all your arguments and reveal the significance of the subjects for the reader.
  • Try not to leave the frames of your research: show new perspectives to the reader but remember to connect them with your paper written.

More tips:

  • Do not use emotional language: the essay must be composed in a formal tone.
  • Reference your work properly: your statements must be based on the authoritative sources.
  • Do not forget about proofreading. Read the paper few times and correct the mistakes.
  • Good idea is to give your essay to your friend or relative so you can learn an off-site opinion about it and get some pieces of advice.
