How to write an essay in MLA format properly?

MLA style (Modern Language Association) determines using writing English language and provides the system of in-text referencing and work cited page. Typically, this referencing style is used for liberal arts and humanities essays. One of the most positive features of MLA is that this system lets the writer protect him of accusations of plagiarism (copying somebody’s thoughts, ideas, or any other materials). Our guide will provide the readers with the main rules of using the MLA format for structuring the essay and work cited page.

  1. 1. General guidelines.
  • The paper should be double spaced and typed in the legible font; usually it is Times New Roman.
  • Typical font size is 12 pt.
  • All sides should have at least 1 inch margins.
  • You should leave one space after periods and other punctuation marks.
  • There must be a header with the numbers for all pages in the right upper corner. Sometimes the instructor may ask not to number the first page. We do recommend you to follow your instructor’s requirements carefully.
  • Write the titles of longer works in italics in your essay.
  • The endnotes should be written on the separate page before the Work Cited page. The title of note page is “Notes” and should be centered and not formatted.
  1. 2. Title page of the MLA paper.
  • Remember that you should include the title page only if it is specified by your instructor.
  • The left upper corner should contain your name, the name of your instructor, the course and the date of submission. This part should be double-spaced as well.
  • The title of the essay must be centered and double-spaced too. Do not use any highlights for it, such as underlining, italicizing, or quotation marks. It should be written in standard capitalization. Make sure that you do not use all capital letters for the title.
  • There should be a double space between the title and the first line of the text.
  • All pages must be numbered in the right consequence with the Arabic numerals.
  • Also, each page must have the header with your last name located in the right upper corner.
  1. 3. How to format the section headings.
  • MLA format required the write to divide the essay into sections and number them with the Arabic numbers.
  • The parts usually contain the individual chapters of the book or essay.
  • If the headings of the sections are mostly short try to make all the headings short. And from the other hand, if they are the full sentences keep your manner consistent.
  1. 4. Rules for MLA in-text citations.
  • All the information that you provide as in-text citation should correspond to the sources indicated in the Work Cited page.
  • The quotation and paraphrase in the text must go with the last name of the author and number of page indicated in gaps after it.
  • In case the author’s name appears in the sentence itself you should indicate only the page’s number in gaps after the quotation or paraphrase.

These are the basic rules for MLA essay formatting and in-text citing. Do not hesitate to follow our rules and be sure to get proper results.
